This Autumn I participated at the German Swap "Swap°pen auf Deutsch" again. I would love to participate each time but that's too much work and it was a bit stressful this time again. However, if you see all these beautiful products and have your present in your hands it was worth the effort!

Meine Partnerin Iris hatte sich was Weihnachtliches gewünscht.

My partner Iris had asked for something Christmassy. So I took the chance to try out a few new techniques with a miniquilt/ tablecloth: First, I made a "rose star" with English Paper Piecing and applied it to white fabric. I improvised the Christmas Trees"free hand" and made the binding only in 4 layers following Susannes tutorial.

Since Iris had so many dutch references in her photostream I put a dutch spring greeting on the back.

So, here is finally the beautiful pillow that I got. I had asked for a pillow that would go well with my first quilt and with a geometric pattern. Astrid did a really good job!

Right now there is a climate summit in New York and people all over the world used this as a chance to demonstrate for climate protection.

In this beautiful part of Germany - the "Münsterland" - we can feel privileged to be avoided by larger natural desasters. A few years ago we had around 1.5m of snow, which would cause any Bavarian to smirk slightly, but it resulted in broken down electricity pylons and many regions without power for several days. And this year there were storms with heavy rain that set the city under water and caused two deaths.

However, the idea suggests itself, that even in our moderate regions, the weather is becoming strange. This year we had a very hot June with many days over 30°C, a ***ing cold August (normally the warmest month of the year) where I switched on the seat heating in my car and a wonderful September (no more complaining).

Whenever I think of climate change, the immense oil consumation of our society comes to my mind immediately. How long will it wo well?
If you understand some German you might want to give the link above a try. It is a podcast about Peak Oil. If you don't understand any German a search on "Peak Oil" might result in interessting information.

There are many different ways to enjoy pizza. Personally, I prefer the very thin traditional italian kind.

This recipe is enough for 4 little pizzas or 2 backing trays. Since the dough is very thin you might want to make a salad or a side dish to ensure that everyone eats his fill.

Das Rezept/ the recipe

Für allgemeine Hinweise beachte den Post "Backen mit Hefe"
For general hints and tricks look up the post "backing with yeast"

Zutaten/ ingredients:

Für den Teig/ For the dough:

20g Hefe / 20g fresh yeast

etwas lauwarmes Wasser / some lukewarm water

500g Weizenmehl / 500g wheat flour

1/2 TL Salz / 1/2 teaspoon salt

Für den Belag/ For the topping:

1 kleine Dose geschälte Tomaten / 1 small tin canned peeled tomatoes

eine handvoll Cherrytomaten / a handful of cherry tomatoes

1 Büffelmozarella / buffalo mozarella

etwas frisch geriebener Parmesan oder Pecorino / some freshly grated Parmesan or Pecorino

Salz und Pfeffer / Salt and Pepper

Knoblauch / garlic

einige Blätter Basilikum / some basil leaves

Additionally: some (scant) topping of choice like bell peppers, onions, mushrooms or salami. Important: put topping on the pizza only lightly to avoid mushy dough.

Zubereitung / Preparation:

Kurz stehen lassen.

Dissolve the yeast in about half a mug of lukewarm water. Let it rest shortly.

Put the flour on your countertop and create a well.

Fill the liquid into the well and mix. Add salt and knead well. In doing so add water until you have a soft and elastic dough (like a baby butt). It should neither tear nor stick.

Let the covered dough rise until it has doubled its size.

Pre-heat the oven and prepare a simple tomato-sauce from the tinned tomatos, salt, pepper and garlic.

Knead the dough once again for a short time and divide it into portions for 4 single pizzas or 2 baking trays.

Roll out very thin, put on the backing tray and cover lightly with sauce, topping, mozarella and parmesan.

ca. 20min bei ca. 230°C backen. Vorher schon nachgucken!

Bake at around 230°C for about 20min. Check it before!

This summer dear friends of ours became parents of a little baby boy. I could not resist and made a blanket. First I was planning on a quilt for a stroller, but then I thought that the child might use a larger quilt for a longer time.
The mother wished for a (nearly) monocoloured quilt in blue. Most of the backgroundfabrics are by Westfalenstoffe as well as the backing. I bought the "pictures" as a collection online.
With this quilt I put a bit more effort into the quilting but it remains my weakness in creating a quilt. I'm simply not patient enough....

This post is supposed to be a start into a series about backing with yeast. Yeast pastry - either sweet or savoury - is delicious, filling and cheap. In future you will find new recipes tagged "yeast".

Zunächst einige Grundlagen zu Hefeteig:
A few basics on working with yeast first:

I prefer to work with fresh yeast. This has to be as fresh as possible and you have to clean your hands thoroughly before handling the dough.

In Germany you can buy several brands of fresh yeast. Try several of them until you find the one that works best for you. For some reasons, "Dr. Oetker" doesn't seem to work for me although I'm convinced by their other baking products.

Yeast dough loves it to be warm and cozy. Place your dough into a sunny spot for rising.

Yeast pastry needs very high temperatures to bake. Make two loads at once or place something else into the oven to save energy.

Yeast pastry tastes best when it's very fresh. Leftovers can be frozen easily. I even freeze the leftovers if I plan to eat them the next day.

Hefeteig braucht Zeit. Also lieber länger als kürzer gehen lassen!

Yeast pastry needs time. My mother always says that the dough is best if you "forget" it in between. Hence let the dough rise rather longer than shorter!

Nutrition experts always say that you have to have a proper breakfast and preferably eat only something light in the evening. I'm probably their nightmare! After getting up I can't manage to eat anything, just in the course of the morning I'm able to eat something. And the main meal of my day is in the evening, preferably around 8pm. Well, since I have to eat something before lunch and since the things offered at work make my cholesterol level jump just from looking at them I need to have some snacks that bring me over the day. Internet is a treasure chest of ideas. I made up my own version of energy-bars from recipes found there.

The recipe makes one backing tray, that's about 30 bars.
You may vary a bit with the amounts of the ingredients, especially you can choose which nuts and dried fruits to use.

500g Trockenfrüchte (Rosinen, getrocknete Cranberries, Datteln, Trockenpflaumen,...)

500g dried fruits (raisins, dried cranberries, dates, dried plums,...)

300g Nüsse und Kerne (Mandeln, Haselnüsse, Sonnenblumenkerne,...)

300g nuts and seeds (almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds,...)

300g kernige Haferflocken

300g whole rolled porridge oats

300g Vollkornmehl

300g wholemeal flour

700-750g fruit squish (apple sauce, squished bananas,... it should not be too liquid)

1 TL Salz

1 teaspoon salt

9 EL Öl (Raps oder Sonnenblume)

9 tablespoons oil (sunflower or rapeseed)

5 EL Süße (Honig, Agarvendicksaft, Birnendicksaft)

5 tablespoons sweetness (honey, sirup)

That are more than 2kg healthy Yumminess! Take a big bowl and mix all ingredients well with a spoon. It might be helpfull to add flour and oats last because they like to stick to the ground.

Take a deep backing tray and add a sheet of baking paper. Distribute the mixture as evenly as possible and without holes on the baking tray. You can sprinkle it with some seeds (I used sesame) if you want to, before putting the tray in the pre-heated oven for 35-40min at 200°C with upper and lower heat.

Wait until it's only lukewarm before cutting.

Of course, I wanted to make expecially good looking bars today and than I set the oven to the wrong setting. That's why it was too hot and the bars turned out - let' call it - crispy ;) I've cut off the worst and the rest is still eatable.

Here are some more tips:

The bars stay fresh only for a few days, but they're very good for freezing and they're defrosted in less than an hour.

Getrocknete Aprikosen schmeckt man fast nicht raus, also lieber die günstigen Rosinen nehmen.

You cannot taste dried apricots in this, so better take the cheaper raisins.

You need quite a lot of energy for this recipe. Consider to put a casserole or cake into the oven as well.

If you're living in Germany you can get all ingredients in organic quality at Alnatura (dm) and safe some trips to several supermarkets.

I've read somewhere that you can use leftover of cooked rice/ couscous/... for cereal bars. I've not tried that yet.

Finally I managed to finish another Quilt! I've made another one in between but I forgot to write about it ;)

I chose mainly blue and teal fabrics: Some FQ "Salt Water" by Tula Pink, some FQ "Seascapes" by Deb Strain and lots of fabrics from my scrap bin. At first I was sceptic about the harmony of the fabrics, but in combination and with the strong mixing by the pattern I got a lovely and lively result. Maybe I should keep to this concept in future.

Of course, I only finished this project because the delivery was due (a very late christmas present for my uncle). And then I was running out of time and the sky would not brighten up, so I could not take nice photos at home. Well then, time for improvising: we met at a big swedish furniture place for breakfast, my sister helped to hold up the quilt and my uncle took the photo - a real family project!

If I had to make a list what I like best about making a quilt then I would put picking the fabrics first. That's why I have several stacks of fabric wating to become a quilt and also some half-finished quilts. I also enjoy to sew, it depends a bit on the pattern. What I don't like at all is to skid around on my knees for several hours and to struggle with the safety pins. Spray-Basting is no alternative for me because I try to sew with natural products only. And that's why quilts stay unfinished for quite some time with me ;)Jennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15360560633784453974noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3519548182204614774.post-48928883745141171832014-01-23T14:17:00.000+01:002014-01-23T21:05:01.245+01:00Mini Lone Star - Tutorial/ Anleitung

Entschuldigt die Bildqualität, ich musste abends fotografieren.

Excuse the quality of the pictures, I had to take the photos in the evening.

As a start a few sentences on the choice of fabric. I used a lot of different scraps for this project. They have to be at least 23" long or you have to have enough to make two about 14-15" strips. It looks best if you choose fabrics of the same colour for the middle ring. However, you can also use the same fabric twice. For the points of the stars you might consider a fabric that has a nice contrast to your background fabric. I chose a white background and darker fabrics for the points.

Now up to the most tricky part: The diamonds, that make the star, have to be sewn together. Place the fabrics as in the photos above. Use a ruler to check if the fabrics cross at 0.25" and the seams match. Press the seams open again.

Before moving on you should lay out your star again to avoid confusion in the following steps.

Take a diamond and one of the larger triangles. Place them on top of each other as shown above. Take care that a little point sticks out (see the lower right corner of the photo). Sew the pieces together using a 0.25" seam. Iron to one side so that the seam allowance is under the star. Remember that you have to make four pieces in this direction and four pieces in the other direction. It's simpler to remember if you place the finished pieces back into your star.

Sew one of the smaller triangles to the other outer side of the diamond, placing it centered. Press in direction of the star again.

When you have finished all of your diamonds, lay out the star again and straighten the inner sides.

Sew two of the elements together to make a square. It looks best if the seams match where the star joins the background. You can cheat with the rest. Press these seams open.
You can see little "ears" in the centres in the photo. You should cut them off to avoid fabric bulk.

Fast fertig!

Nearly finished! Sew the squares together and press the seams open.

Now you simply have to square the block up to 12.5" x 12.5".

I'd love it if you could post a link with your finished star and tell me how you managed with this tutorial. Also feel free to correct my English ;)

Do you know this, when you see a block and instantly fall in love with the pattern? That's the case for me with the Lone Star pattern. What I didn't like that much was that most Lone Star Quilts are a single giant star (yes, I know that's in the name), until I found this tutorial. Leila is a fantastic needlewoman, but I'm not. That's why my first attempt at y-seams were a crooked fail.

That's why I needed a simpler Version. I divided the background areas into triangles to avoid the y-seams.

This way it's much more easy. I will try to write a tutorial soon.
This new year isn't that new any longer. Still, I'm going to write something about finished and planned projects.

First, I will start with the finished projects. I've sewn a lot, including a quilt, but I've hardly photographed anything. You simply have to believe my word ;)
The only photographed project is a giant pillow I made for my sister.

It measures 80x80cm and takes her love for music and pink into credit.

And now to the projects in planning. I'm more hesistand to talk about these, because I tend towards planning a lot and finishing only a bit. Nonetheless a jump into the cold water:

Sewing: I will continue with the sew.quilt.give bee. This bee has given me much joy the last years, because I could learn so many new things and be creative with my own fabrics. The "Landmädel QAL" (Farmer's Wife) I will only follow every now and then. In exchange I'm now member of "fleißige bee'nchen", a german modern bee. And last but not least I could not resist to sign up for another round of "Swap!pen auf Deutsch".

Blogging: You might have noticed, that there was not much going on on this blog lately. After giving it some thought, I came to the conclusion, that photographie is the main cause. I'm rarely at home during "good light" hours. I only have a small compact camera and no intentions on becoming a semi-professional photographer. Moreover, it usually takes me a long time to finish a quilt and I don't like making WIP-posts. Thus my future plan is to write more about my other big hobby, cooking. With this I can take several nice pictures a week and put the plate under the counter lights to get decent photos.

Cooking and Eating: as mentioned above, this is my other big hobby and fits my blogtitel ;) My this year's resolution is to have more variety in my diet and to prepare more provisions for work. I hope to be able to pass interesting experiences to you.

With german needlewomen (online at least) there is regurlarly a discussion about sewing in inch or in cm. Personally, I prefer the american tutorials and at least with patchwork there is a lot more to choose from. However, doing the calculations in inch gives me the headache, particularly if I want to know how many strips with x-inches width to get out of y-yards of fabric. It would be so much nicer if the whole world could come to terms on one system for measurement (preferential the metric)!

There is a nice online-comic that focusses on all the big and small differences around the world including the measurements that we have to rack our brains about.
Every now and then I get the urge to redesign something around the house. Usually that's nothing big, I just place a piece of furniture differently, change some accessory and I'm done. For more <strike>I'm usually too lazy</strike> I usually don't feel like it. However I always enjoy browsing the internet for things other people have made and making plans in my head. Today I want to show you some of my inspirational pages.

Colours are very important for me. It is really helpfull to have a concept of the colours for each room in your mind when shopping for furnitures or decoration. That's where the page "design-seeds" comes in very handy. For example these colours would look great in a bedroom.

Obviously you should have made up your mind about what kind of style you prefer. You can find many fun (and not necessarily making sense) quizes (what's the plural?) on the internet. One of the better ones is this one. Moreover you a lot of information about several design eras. Apparently my style is "American Industrial Design" ; )

So, we've finally come to the DIY-pages that I love to browse. First there is "ikeahackers" for all friends of swedish furniture stores.

look at this beautiful sewing room made with IKEA products

Jessica of howaboutorange also always has many inspirations for small projects.

And then there are all the pages by well-known interior design magazines and TV-shows. It's worth browsing them once in a while.

Last but not least we lovers of fabric are always able to sew something. You can find some of the pages I browse regurlarly on the right side bar.

Well, I hope I could give you some interesting suggestions. What will be your next project?Jennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15360560633784453974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3519548182204614774.post-26362095181629394122013-08-09T14:31:00.000+02:002013-08-09T14:31:00.046+02:00A Skirt - Ein Rock!
Since I had dared to sew a garment (the Staples Dress) for the first time, I found it to be actually quite fun and started the next project. This is a simple skirt, a free tutorial can be found here.

Originally I wanted to use an other fabric, but then I liked these dots so well that I decided in favour for "Beechwood Park" by Jenean Morrison for Free Spirit.

The tutorial was really easy to follow and I finished the skirt in two hours. Practiced seamstresses could probably make it even faster. The only adjustement I made was that I used french seams for the side seams.
I always had to take my hat off to people who know how to sew clothes. I thought that that wasn't something I could do, regarding my "non-standard-body". How I was wrong!

I changed my mind the moment I saw the first photos of April Rhodes' Staple Dress pop up on the Internet. A loose fitting dress, shirred in the middle, and most important: without darts. That should be manageable!

For the fabric I chose a design from the "Indie"-collection by Pat Bravo for Art Gallery. I had seen photos of this dress made with other fabrics from this collection and hence could be quite sure, that it would have a nice drape.

The dress was really easy to sew, the hemline required some patience however.

Recently I wrote in this blog about my first experiments with making stamps. Here's now the promised tutorial on making stamps with kids.

I took this crappy photo with my mobile phone, but you should get the idea.

Materialliste / required materials:

starker Karton (notfalls zwei Lagen zusammen kleben) strong cardboard (glue two layers together if yours is too flimsy)

Moosgummi (Reste) foam craft sheets (leftovers)

Flüssigkleber liquid glue

scharfe Schere (evtl. auch Cutter und Schneidematte) sharp scissors (possibly cutter and cutting mat)

Stempelkissen ink pad

First of all you should give some thought to the purpose and thus the basic shape of the stamp. If you simply want to get fun decorations onto paper/ fabric - go ahead, the basic shape does not matter. However, if you want to cover an area with your design, you have to give the basic shape some thought. To archive an evenly covered area without gaps, you need a basic shape that works for tessellations. For an easy solution start with squares and rectangles. Templates for other tessallations can be found here.

When you have decided on a basic shape, cut it out of strong cardboard. You might need a cutter with mat for that purpose (kids shouldn't do this). Stamps made out of cardboard should not be longer than 2", so that you can press them properly. For a more professional aproach you can use acrylic plates. Afterwards you can start to actually design the motive of the stamp. Copy the basic shape several times on paper and start sketching. Expecially for kids (and other impassioned persons) the motives should not be too small and flimsy.

So, we're nearly there. Copy the motive onto foam craft sheet, cut it out and fix it with liquid glue (not for small kids) on the basic shape. Use some paper or cardboard leftovers to make a handle.

Whenever I go shopping for fabric online I feel drawn towards fabrics that are hand printed or at least have a handprinted feeling to them. That's why I bought myself a book to learn about the required techniques.

I decided to start with techniques that don't require a lot of special equipment. Funnily enough my brother, who had done some T-Shirt printing himself was visiting that day. Doing such things together is a lot more fun!

One of the techniques we gave a try was working with freezer paper. This paper can be ironed on fabric and easily peeled of later. The ink fills the empty places in the paper just as with a template. This is why this method works best with small motives. Unfortunately the ink messed up the paper. That's why I did not try to iron it on a second time.

The teacattle worked well, the duck was too large and made a real mess.

I especially enjoyed making stamps. My brother and I simply carved the designs into cheap erasers from the Dollar-Store with a scalpel. Designs with long and smooth curves were easier to make than designs consisting of many small parts. These stamps are comfortable to hold, you can use them over and over again and they don't need much ink.

The lily of the valley was easier to carve and made a better stamp than the other one.

I usually write this blog in English, but I found a new group on flickr that's based in Germany. It's nice to see modern sewing in Germany. That's why I will try to write in both languages here in the future.

The group mentioned above is called Swap°pen auf deutsch. A swap works like this: Someone in the group will sew something for you while you sew something for someone else in the group. Up until the end it's a secret who sews for whom. Great fun! This time the theme was to sew a tote.

In the beginning I felt unsure how well I would fit into this group because there were many experienced sewers. Moreover my partner had picked colours that were not represented well in my stash. Lucky for me, she swapped from red/ orange/ yellow to blue/ green/ grey.

I chose Elizabeth Hartman's "perfect quilted tote". The tutorial is very well written with many pictures. Next time however, I would cut the batting slightly too small, because all the quilting flattens the batting and pushes it into the seem allowances.

So, here finally is the tote I sewed for dear Erika: (please excuse the poor quality of the photos. I never get the light right with indoor photos).

I got to know many nice people through Swap°pen auf deutsch and there will be a sequel. Some of us will start a farmer's wife quilt along. I'm really looking forward to this project, particularly because I could coax my mum into taking part as well.
